Post-Conviction Relief in Texas

Relief routes in Texas

Texas distinguishes final felony habeas proceedings from community-supervision cases. Article 11.07 is the principal writ route for a final non-death felony conviction; Article 11.072 addresses community supervision. Article 11.073 concerns certain scientific-evidence claims.

Identify whether the judgment is final, whether the sentence involves community supervision, and whether an earlier writ has already been filed. Use the Court of Criminal Appeals’ current Article 11.07 form when that procedure applies. The form requests both the grounds and their supporting facts.

Timing and earlier filings

State writ requirements and restrictions on later applications still matter even where a familiar short filing deadline does not apply. Federal habeas has a separate limitations framework. Do not treat the state and federal clocks as interchangeable.
