Austin: Travis felony records versus nearby county files
Austin crosses Travis, Williamson and Hays county lines. Travis County’s District Clerk Criminal Division maintains adult felony criminal records, while its page directs misdemeanor-record questions to the Travis County Clerk. That split is particularly useful when someone remembers only that a case happened in Austin. Read the charge and court heading before choosing between a felony case-file request and a county misdemeanor search.
For Travis County, the District Clerk’s case-information page explains the available record-access routes. A current criminal-settings search answers a scheduling question; it does not by itself supply the complete papers behind an older conviction. The Travis County Law Library also explains that public access to a register of actions differs from access to case-file documents. Identify the judgment and relevant orders by name when asking for copies.
Williamson County uses a separate District Clerk and court-case lookup. An Austin residence in Williamson County does not make a conviction a Travis case, and a later move to Austin does not change where an older file is held. For a Hays judgment, locate the named court using the state directory. Give a prospective provider the county, court and procedural dates together, rather than an Austin location and a general description of the sentence.
