Houston records: Harris County and neighboring counties

A Houston mailing address can point to Harris, Fort Bend or Montgomery County. The Harris County District Clerk offers a criminal case search, but that search is not a metro-wide repository. Before using it, read the judgment’s county, court number and cause number. A family member living in Houston may also be helping with a conviction from a completely different county; the family’s present address does not move that file to Harris County.

For a Harris County case, use the criminal search to identify the court and available docket entries, then ask the District Clerk about copies of the particular judgment, plea papers or orders needed. For a Fort Bend conviction, the county’s District Clerk page has a separate online-records route, including historical records. Keep documents from each office in separate folders so similar defendant names or unrelated charges do not become one combined case history.

Houston also has federal criminal cases. Check whether the judgment says United States District Court or a Texas district court before choosing a provider or purchasing records. A county search does not establish the status of a federal appeal. When comparing help, ask whether the provider can work with the actual court record and whether its service includes representation or only research and document preparation.
