Wrongful Conviction in Georgia
Review Georgia wrongful conviction procedures, issue-specific records, official sources, and attorney or non-attorney support options.
Separate innocence evidence from procedural error
A wrongful-conviction inquiry can concern factual innocence, unreliable evidence, or an unfair process. Explain which problem is alleged and what supports it. An innocence organization may review a narrower set of cases than a firm offering general post-conviction representation.
Georgia procedure and this issue
Georgia wrongful-conviction referrals should distinguish factual-innocence investigation from a general procedural challenge. An innocence nonprofit may investigate qualifying new evidence, while the courts use defined new-trial, appeal and habeas procedures. The official habeas form requests the conviction, plea, trial, appeal and prior-filing histories rather than only a narrative asserting unfairness. HB 176 reopened specified postjudgment mechanisms subject to limited periods; the special window for specified previously dismissed out-of-time matters ended June 30, 2026. That past date must not be advertised as continuing relief.
Check the record and procedural history
Georgia’s official habeas application separates the original conviction, appeals, earlier collateral proceedings and individual grounds. Its instructions identify different limitation periods for felony and misdemeanor judgments. Finality, a later-accruing statutory basis and the relevant exception must be examined together; a four-year or one-year number cannot be applied just by counting from the date someone first contacted a provider. The form is a starting resource, not a ruling on eligibility or timeliness.
Is the claim that the person did not commit the offense, or that the proceedings were defective? Is there reliable new evidence? Does the organization’s eligibility match the case?
Help with documents and court representation
PCRC is a non-attorney legal support and document-preparation service for pro se clients. Attorney advice and court representation are distinct services. Compare the provider type and written scope before engaging help; a featured directory listing does not establish a right to relief.

Common questions
Does finding a provider preserve a court deadline?
No. A directory visit, inquiry or service agreement is not itself a court filing. Use the actual judgment and filing history to check the procedure, current requirements and any applicable exception.
What records are useful for this inquiry?
Start with trial record, identification evidence, forensic reports, witness statements, undisclosed materials. Include all earlier orders on the same subject rather than sending only a new summary.
